Dental bonding is a branch of dentistry, called adhesive dentistry. It involves the use of adhesives and a blue light to apply tooth-colored resin. This procedure is carried out primarily for cosmetic purposes. It improves the appearance of a chipped tooth or a discolored one.On top of the teeth appearance, the procedure is also used to make teeth look longer, change their color or shape, and reduce the space between teeth. Dental bonding can also be used as a protection remedy for exposed root parts of the teeth when the gums recede and as an alternative to amalgam fillings.
On top of the teeth appearance, the procedure is also used to make teeth look longer, change their color or shape, and reduce the space between teeth. Dental bonding can also be used as a protection remedy for exposed root parts of the teeth when the gums recede and as an alternative to amalgam fillings.
This procedure does not require, any major preparations. There is the use of anesthesia is not necessary unless there is filling of a decayed tooth needed. The first thing that the dentist does is to match the color of your teeth and that of the composite resin. In dental bonding, there are two forms that are done; adhesive bonding and direct composite bonding.
It is a procedure that involves attachment of a restoration to a tooth; this procedure is usually carried out for aesthetic crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers and inlays. Upon selecting a suitable color for you, your dentist will use a gentle acid solution to roughen your teeth, usually phosphoric acid is used.
The bonding agent in liquid form and then applied once the roughing agent is removed. The desirable resin is then applied, molded and smoothed to the desired shape; the resin is then hardened using a curing blue light. Polishing is carried out until there is uniformity in the sheen of the tooth surface.
Direct Composite Bonding
Is a process where natural-looking material is used to repair cracks or chips, fill cavities, building of worn out teeth edges and closing up gaps between teeth. The material may be applied and shaped to the tooth’s surface that are prominently visible when you smile.
Dental bonding has both pros and cons; some of the pros are; It is a dentistry procedure that does not cost a lot and can be done without many requirements or complications. Secondly, this procedure does not require removal of tooth enamel, and finally there is no use of anesthesia.
Some of the cons involve; the material used is not as strong as the real teeth, thus biting on hard material like fingernails, ice or chewing on pens can chip the material. Bonding may require to be repaired after a few years and is not a long term remedy.
After bonding has been done, teeth should be taken care of as normally as in natural teeth. Proper hygiene habits should also be observed in which, brushing and flossing is involved. Since chipping is bound to occur, one should avoid biting on the hard stuff. If your teeth feel different, you should consult your dentist.
